- The space between the bottom rail and the decking boards.

How to Measure Your Clear Run Accurately
The biggest mistake DIYers and apprentices make when setting out a handrail is measuring from the wrong points. Your clear run is the exact measurement between the inside faces of your two supporting posts—not from the centre of the posts, and not the overall handrail length.

- Measure the clear span: Run a tape measure from the inside face of Post A to the inside face of Post B.
- Input your dimensions: Enter that clear span and the exact width of your baluster material into the calculator above.
- Mark the centres: The calculator provides the exact centre-to-centre spacing. Start at the inside edge of Post A, measure out half of a clear gap plus half a baluster width to find your first centre mark. Then, step out the centre-to-centre measurement across the span.
