How to Convert Megajoules (MJ) to kW

To convert gas ducted heating Megajoules (MJ/hr) to delivered Kilowatts (kW), multiply the MJ/hr input by the heater’s thermal star rating efficiency, then divide by 3.6. One kilowatt of thermal energy equals exactly 3.6 Megajoules per hour.

Delivered Heat (kW) = [Gas Input (MJ/hr) × Efficiency %] ÷ 3.6

Because gas heaters burn natural gas or LPG to produce flame, not all energy enters your living room. The difference between gas input and heat output depends entirely on the star rating:

  • Standard 3-Star Unit (66% Efficiency): A 100 MJ/hr unit delivers only 18.3 kW of warmth. The remaining 34% of gas purchased goes straight up the metal flue into the sky.

Condensing units run their exhaust gases through a secondary heat exchanger until water vapour condenses into liquid, releasing latent heat. Because the exhaust exits at low temperatures (around 45°C to 55°C), condensing heaters do not use hot metal flues. Instead, they vent through neat PVC or polypropylene power flues through external walls, with a drain line connected for acidic condensate disposal.

Minimum Outlets & Duct Airflow Rules

Every gas ducted heater requires a minimum number of permanently open outlets to maintain safe airflow across the heat exchanger. Running a high-capacity heater with too few vents open triggers the internal high-limit safety thermostat, causing the burner to shut down to prevent cracked exchangers.

  • Airflow Rule of Thumb: Central gas ducted heating systems require approximately 30 to 35 Litres per second (L/s) of supply air per kW of heat output to deliver comfortable 45°C discharge air at the floor or ceiling registers.
  • Minimum Open Vents: A 60 MJ unit requires at least 4 open outlets; an 80–95 MJ unit requires at least 6 to 7 open outlets; and a 120–140 MJ unit requires at least 9 to 11 open outlets.
  • Zoning Precautions: If your home has electronic duct zone dampers (e.g. living zone vs bedroom zone), ensure that each individual zone contains enough outlets to meet the heater manufacturer's minimum operating airflow limit, or install an automatic spill damper.
  • Return Air Grille Sizing: Undersized return air grilles create loud rushing air noise in hallways. Allow at least 0.25m² of free face area for every 1,000 L/s of fan airflow.

Gas Pipe Sizing to AS/NZS 5601

Under Australian Standard AS/NZS 5601.1:2022 (Gas Installations), the gas piping network must supply the full rated Megajoule demand of all appliances running simultaneously with a maximum pressure drop of no more than 0.12 kPa from the gas meter regulator to the appliance valve.
